Sara Abalan has been working and living in New York City since the 1990’s. Early in her professional career she was the art director and illustrator for “The COOK'S Magazine.” After 15 years in art direction she moved to New York City to study at the New York Studio School where it is felt that drawing is the most crucial pathway to understanding in art, and is the common bond between the disciplines of painting and sculpture. There are few places where drawing is so intensely investigated. Light, color, gesture, and spatial relationships are many of the formal characteristics of Sara’s abstraction. The process of layering, mark making, and building up surfaces in her paintings and drawings is an intuitive attempt to chronicle the events, encounters, and fleeting moments experienced living in a dense urban environment.
